The
Maradol
Papaya
Originally,
papaya growing is from Southern Mexico and Central America. This growing
has successfully acclimated to different tropical and subtropical
zones in the world. The papaya is a large oval yellow-reddish fruit
whose soft skin is thin. Its yellow-orange flesh is firm and sweet
in all the different varieties available on the market.
The Maradol
variety has had great success in few years and has become a prominent
fruit in tropical zone harvests because of its characteristics such
as its flavor and food value of interest to customers, but also because
of growers can take advantage of its marketability and profitability
The most
outstanding features of Maradol papaya are:
- This
papaya variety is the earliest due to the fact that its flowering
begins approximately in 3 months after planting out and its harvest,
in 7 months. Nevertheless the latter can remain for 20 months. The
fruition begins almost 50 centimeters above ground.
- At
the beginning of the harvest, dwarf fruit trees are 1.20 or 1.70
meters from ground level to terminal bud. In the middle of the production,
they can be over 2.30 meters.
- This
growing has a high marketability because it has been possible to
produce 200 tons per acre. In better conditions, it is possible
to produce approximately 120 tons per acre.
- Papaya
fruits are homogeneous in shape and size.
- Coming
from hermaphrodite plants, 66% of papaya's fruits are extended,
33% of fruits are rounded and come from female plants. Finally,
1% of fruits come from hermaphrodite, intermediate, sterile and
male plants.
- The
fruit average weight is from 1.5 a 2.6 kilograms, extended fruits
prevail over (hermaphrodite) due to the fact that their shape and
size are appropriate for marketing
- The
Papaya's skin is yellow, shiny orange, and its flesh is bright red,
very attractive for consumers.
- The
papaya has an adequate sugar nutritional value (approximately 12
brix degrees). Its flavor is delicious and its flesh has an excellent
consistency. Undoubtedly this is a very distinctive characteristic
of this papaya variety.
- Because
of the papaya's thick epidermis, thick mesocarp, slow length and
smooth skin, papaya growing has advantages for shipment and storage.
