Methodology of sowing the seed

Seed precautions

The seed of papaya is very sensitive to climate and humidity changes because they can cause a progressive decrease of seed's viability and germination. Therefore, the seed must not be under current climate conditions for a long time.

Semillas del Caribe keeps papaya seeds under controlled temperature and humidity conditions. That is why it is advisable to purchase seeds when tree nursery and soil are ready to begin with works in the field.

Common problems when not using pre-germination

To begin with the trade production of papaya, the first step is the establishment of the tree nursery and secondly, to transport plantlets to their planting in the field.

When seeds are sowed in the bags, trays or any other container, there may be the following problems:

a). - The germination process is slow and it can take 15 to 21 days during hot seasons and 30 to 40 days during cold seasons.

b) Germination is not uniform so plantlets can sprout between 4 to 7 days. Later, it can cause a different growth in the tree nursery.

c) Some bags, trays or containers can remain empty or without plants because not all seeds germinate. In spite of being alive, many seeds can be in a latent condition without germinating.

In order to solve these difficulties, the pre-germination of seeds has been developed.

Methodology of pre-germination

a) Seeds are soaked in a container having neutral PH water. Water should cover seeds lightly.

b) Water must be renovated 8-12 hours per 2 to 3 days.

c) After 48 hours in water, floating seeds are taken to another container to continue being in soak. If seeds have not sunk after 24 hours, they must be eliminated.

d) In the last change of water, a fungicide must be added such as Manzate ®(Mancozeb 80%) 2 grams. / water liter® or Benlate ®(Benomilo 50%) 1.5 grs. / per water liter.

e) After finishing the period of soaking, water is removed and a germination stimulator is applied such as Biozyme pp ® gr./100 grams of seeds, Agromil S ®; to 1cc. per 500 grams of seeds (auxins, cytokines, among others). But also some systematic insecticide can be used to control insects Gaucho ®(Imidachloprid 70%) 3.5 grs./ 50 grs of seed.

f) Later on, seeds are put on flannel in a sandwich-shape. Previously, flannels should be disinfected, washed, but also they should be boiled for 20 minutes.

g) An optimal humidity should be kept by avoiding excess of water which can cause a risk of non-germination of seeds.

h) In order to achieve better germination and fast shooting, temperatures above 35° are recommended in the places where seeds are put in germination.

i) Only seeds which have germinated (opened) can be taken to the tree nursery

j) To transport seeds to the tree nursery and to keep them humid while they are sowed, a soak flannel is placed on the bottom of a container to avoid dehydratation.

k) Seeds must be place to 1 centimeter-depth in the container (bag).

l) Only one seed is put per container, even though 2 seeds can be sowed in case of the hermaphrodite plants' percentage needs increasing in the orchard.
