A great profitable business

Globally, the great development of papaya growing is due to its extraordinary characteristics of embarkation and marketability, but also to its incredible amount of consumers. However, its success is due to the fact that this a great profitable business for growers who live in tropical and subtropical zones and look for a type of growing which is a profitable business.

This is a cost overview based on a research carried out by our enterprise in February 2000. This is a cost production of a papaya Maradol hectare under Mexico's average conditions and its cycle is 18 months (2 at tree nursery, 7 at growth, 9 at crop):

Concept

Soil preparation $   3,190.00 Usd. $    319.00
Planting preparation $   4,647.50 Usd. $    464.75
Transplanting $   1,540.00 Usd. $    154.00
Irrigation $   3,400.00 Usd. $    340.00
Weed control $   3,100.00 Usd. $    310.00
Phyto-sanitary control $ 24,987.00 Usd. $ 2,498.70
Fertilization $ 26,244.00 Usd. $ 2,624.40
Field works $   9,940.00 Usd. $    994.00
Crop $ 28,500.00 Usd. $ 2,850.00
Total $105,548.50 Usd. $ 10,554.85

Note: currency exchange is 10.00 pesos per dollar

The fruit-kilogram paid-to-grower average price varied between 2 to 6 pesos (0.20 to 0.60 dollars) in 1999. The price also depended on the quality of fruits, season and the market where fruits were sent.

The profitability that a grower can obtain from a production of 108 tons of fruits during 9 months will be:

6.00 108 648,000 105,549 542,451 1:6.14

Evidently, it is a very profitable business, but the basis of success is to use certified seed in order to produce high quality fruits, which can be transported, and consumers buy them in good conditions. Any failure on this issue will affect price, production and of course profits.
